The Leadership Advantage: Making People Feel Valued
Every leader wants a motivated team.
They want people who show initiative, take ownership, and consistently perform at a high level.
The question is: How do you create that?
Many leaders believe the answer is motivation.
The reality is that motivation is often the result—not the starting point.
The starting point is value.
People Need to Know They Matter
At the core of every person is a desire to feel valued.
People want to know their work matters.
They want to know their ideas matter.
They want to know that they matter.
When employees don't feel valued, they disengage. They stop sharing ideas. They do the minimum required and lose connection to the mission.
But when people feel valued, everything changes.
They become more invested.
More committed.
More willing to go above and beyond.
Being Present Is Powerful
One of the simplest ways to make someone feel valued is to give them your full attention.
In today's world, that's becoming increasingly rare.
How often do leaders try to have a conversation while checking emails, responding to texts, or thinking about the next meeting?
Presence communicates value.
When you stop what you're doing, make eye contact, and genuinely listen, you're sending a message:
"You matter."
Don't Forget Positive Feedback
Many leaders spend most of their time correcting problems.
While accountability is important, encouragement is just as important.
People need to know when they're doing something well.
Positive feedback doesn't have to be complicated.
A simple acknowledgment.
A sincere thank you.
A genuine compliment.
Those moments build confidence, trust, and connection.
Support Creates Motivation
One of the biggest misconceptions in leadership is the belief that leaders must constantly motivate people.
The truth is that support often creates motivation.
When people know their leader believes in them, supports them, and wants them to succeed, their motivation naturally increases.
Support creates confidence.
Confidence creates action.
Action creates results.
A Question for Leaders
As you reflect on your leadership this week, ask yourself:
Do my people feel valued because of the way I lead?
Not because of the paycheck.
Not because of the benefits.
Not because of the title.
Because of the way you treat them.
The leaders who create the greatest impact are the leaders who help people feel seen, heard, and appreciated.
Because when people feel valued, they don't just work harder.
They become better.
Leadership Challenge
This week, intentionally make someone feel valued.
✔ Give someone your undivided attention.
✔ Recognize a contribution that may have gone unnoticed.
✔ Ask someone how you can better support them.
Small actions can create lasting impact.
And sometimes the most powerful thing a leader can do is remind someone that they matter.
Learn it. Live it. Give it.
