Routines Create Discipline: How to Conquer Your Feelings

Jul 17, 2024

What hinders most people from being disciplined at anything is how they feel. "I'm not going to the gym today because I don't feel like it" or "I'm not going to start that until tomorrow because I don't feel like it today." When we let our feelings control our actions, we are never going to stay consistent with anything. And in order to be consistent, you have to be disciplined.

If you want to be more disciplined at something, there are two things you can do: create a routine to follow and make things easier for yourself.

1. CREATE A ROUTINE

If you create a step by step routine on what you are wanting to accomplish, it will save your brain time trying to talk yourself out of doing it. If you know what the first step is and the next and then the next, it will automatically push yourself into action without even thinking about it. Here are some tips to building and following a routine:

  • Make a list of what needs to be done and put it in order of execution.
  • Have that list near you to visually remind yourself of the step by step process.
  • Keep a daily log if needed to hold yourself accountable.
  • Reward yourself with something once you reach a certain goal.
  • Stay consistent and do not let yourself break the routine.
  • Set aside time to take a break from said routine, but make sure it is small - like once a week.

2. MAKE THINGS EASIER

If you prepare everything needed in order to follow through with what you are trying to accomplish beforehand, it will make it a lot easier for you to get started. When things are already in place for you, you have no excuse to not follow through unless you actually allow your feelings to hold you back. Here are some ways to make things easier for yourself:

  • Set aside whatever you need in order to execute each step in your routine beforehand.
  • Make sure what you need is in close contact to prevent you from talking yourself out of taking that first step.
  • Get yourself an accountability partner to push you when you need it.

CONCLUSION

We all have to conquer our feelings; especially when it comes to getting out of bed in the morning or doing something we may not want to do but know needs to be done. Which is why creating a routine and prepping the steps beforehand to make it easier on yourself is what will help you move past your feelings. Our feelings will almost always hold us back from being disciplined with anything, so make sure you create those routines and do what needs to be done to make it easier follow through with what you are wanting to accomplish.
