The Leadership Mirror

Mar 29, 2023

True or false?

People are born leaders.

False.

True or false?

The organization is in charge of their employee's growth.

False.

Leaders are not born, they are made. The organization is not in charge of their employee's growth, the employee is. YOU are in charge of becoming the best leader you can be and YOU are in charge of your own personal growth.

Of course there are other leaders you may emulate or look up to for guidance and/or mentorship, but you are ultimately responsible for doing what you can to better yourself, every single day. Of course organizations can offer training opportunities and/or workshops for you to attend, etc. but you are ultimately responsible for taking advantage of those opportunities and then applying what you learn to your life.

Try looking at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself these questions:

"Am I doing all I can to become a better leader?"

"Am I giving each day my all?"

"Am I being a good example to others?"

"Am I actually applying what I learn to my life?"

"Am I growing personally and professionally?"

Are you giving yourself the chance to be the best you can possibly be? Are you giving yourself the confidence you need to handle anything that comes your way? Are you giving yourself the time and commitment you need to work on your personal growth?

If you don't do that for yourself, then who will?!

Things you can do to not only grow personally, but to also better your leadership are:

  • Read leadership books
  • Listen to leadership podcasts
  • Talk to others in your same position or higher for advice and team up with them so you can help each other grow
  • Look for opportunities every single day to be significant (such as: picking up trash on the ground, lending a hand to someone who needs help, or saying hello to someone as you walk by them)
  • Journal your leadership journey so you can look back on where you once were and see how far you have come

If you want to get better as a leader, look in the mirror. If you want to grow as a person, look in the mirror. I know how uncomfortable it may be to look at yourself in the mirror (physically and/or psychologically), but being uncomfortable is where real change actually happens. The mirror is where you face the truth, but it is also where you can jump start change when it is needed.

Taking a good look at yourself no matter what that looks like will give you the opportunity to motivate and push yourself to grow and to become the best leader you can possibly be! You cannot change or grow without first looking at yourself in the mirror, so use that mirror as your leadership barometer and never give up!

Always remember that leadership is a journey, not a destination. You are going to hit some bumps along the way, but do not stop striving to become the best version of yourself - not only for you, but for those around you, as well.
